News Agency Retracts Anti-Kratom Story After An Outcry In Support Of Kratom

This week, a local news agency  published a story about Kratom. In this story, the DEA agents identified  Kratom as a synthetic version of marijuana. After publishing it, there was an outcry in support of Kratom and corrections to the article.

The DEA agent they spoke with Thursday admitted he misspoke and later clarified that Kratom is an herbal plant.

Many reached out to the news agency on social media saying the drug DEA cautions of, is doing more help than harm.

“It really made a huge difference in my back,” said Sonya Young, a former Kratom user. Young is not unique in her use of Kratom. There are people all over the world using Kratom to relieve chronic pain, in addition to a large number of other ailments.

“At first I really couldn’t tell, but whenever I went to get up and actually get to going again,” said Young. “I noticed I had really felt a great sense of peace about myself.”

DEA Agent Tommy Flowers clarified that Kratom is an herbal plant.

“It doesn’t have the THC principle, that’s found in marijuana or anything like that,” said Flowers.

Young and many others turn to Kratom to treat chronic pain. One man says it ‘got him off of his painkillers’ and another person says ‘Kratom has given me my life back’.

“What we’re talking about is something that’s just about as addicting as coffee,” said Susan Ash, of the American Kratom Association.

The AKA is a non-profit group of Kratom users advocating for its medicinal use.

“There are companies out there that want to use Kratom as a vehicle to sell other kinds of products and get away with it,” said Ash. “We want to see these people put in jail.”

Young insists this drug has helped her and many others avoid opioids and has a message for those taking Kratom.

“You have to carry the weight of your body for the rest of your life,” said Young. “People really need to be aware of what they’re doing with it.”

  4. Another great article. That retraction of the news piece was brought about by Susan Ash and a group of AKA members who deluged the Arkansas TV station with requests for a retraction of inaccurate claims made by the DEA agent.

I’m sure that other Kratom consumers in Arkansas and elsewhere also complained about the erroneous claim that this herb is merely a synthetic marijuana, but Susan didn’t just write an email and hope for the best. She called the reporter and demanded a correction — and, she got it.
