Local Governments Crack Down on Kratom as 2026 Bans Expand

Spokane City Council voted to ban the sale of kratom on March 2, 2026

UPDATED April 10, 2026: Multiple towns added

Several American towns, cities, and counties have moved to ban the sale and distribution of kratom since the beginning of 2026. Some jurisdictions in Illinois and Mississippi moved to both ban sale and possession, criminalizing kratom consumers. This comes after last year’s announcement by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that it is recommending that 7-hydroxymitragynine become a Schedule I substance on the federal Controlled Substances Act. Confusion from sloppy news reporting, bad kratom and 7-OH industry marketing, and from outdated information still posted on the FDA website has led states, counties, and municipalities to enact blanket bans of all kratom.

Here we list local municipalities and counties that have banned kratom so far in 2026. This is not a comprehensive list. Please let us know in the comments if we’re missing any towns and counties who have already enacted bans in 2026.

For information on possible state level bans, see this article being updated weekly or more.

  1. I found plain leaf kratom 9 years ago. I was ready to give up, the pain of trying to survive was too much. I’m so glad I found it because now I can fight back and know what’s going on.
My family has me back instead of mourning me, because of a tea.
States letting people have “Death with Dignity ” need to start allowing us to live with dignity first.

  2. Kratom literally saved my life. I suffered from early onset rheumatoid arthritis and Kratom is the only thing that relieved my pain. Prescription pain relievers only lasted a few hours and did not relieve my pain. Before Kratom I was unable to walk or even go to the store and my life is enjoyable for the first time in 30 years. In addition, I was able to quit narcotic pain relievers, alcohol and even cigarettes.

  3. Such a shame… politics, greed, and corruption all are behind the banning of a natural leaf that’s helped so many get off of harmful drugs and alcohol. Shame on any politician backing this, as well as the lobbyists and shareholders of corporations behind this travesty.
