Kratom Methods Of Preparation

There are a few popular methods of using powdered leaf, but the most common are with capsules or tablets, “toss and wash”, mixing with food, and preparation as a tea. The following is a guide to help users discover their favorite way to enjoy kratom:

Kratom Capsules and Tablets

Kratom capsules have become one of the most common ways people now use kratom. You can find pre-capsuled kratom in almost any head shop in the US while some choose to buy empty 00 or 000 capsules and capsule their kratom for themselves. 

It’s important to note that 00 capsules are much better suited for kratom extract (due to the necessary dosage concentration of approximately 1/2 a gram to 1 gram. 

000 capsules are better suited for regular kratom powdered leaf. The increased size allows them to hold up to 1 gram of leaf per capsule, minimizing the amount needed for a regular dose.

Toss and Wash

“Toss and wash” is basically just spooning the powder directly into your mouth and washing it down with a liquid. Kratom is known as a diuretic and is associated with dehydration. It is important when using this method that you hydrate. This could be with your favorite sports drink or you can just stick with water. The word hydrate comes from the Greek word for water, so its hard to find a better hydrating beverage. 

This is commonly known as the most “difficult” method but is the quickest in a pinch and arguably gives some of the strongest effects.

The downside to this method is that the powder is incredibly dry and will stick to your mouth and throat, causing many to gag or cough “blow” the dry powder out of their mouth. If using this method of consumption, it is best to spoon small amounts at a time. 

Mixing Kratom With Food

Kratom can also easily be mixed into a food.

Other good suggestions include mixing with chocolate almond milk or chocolate protein powder.

Keep in mind that kratom has a strong flavor and may not mix well in certain foods. Also, you will not reduce the efficacy of kratom if you take it with small amounts of food or any of our recommended recipes.

Kratom Tea Preparation

Lastly, preparation as a tea is convenient and effective. 

It is important to note that only powdered leaf should be used to make tea. Extracts should not be used.

Start by measuring out between 1 teaspoon of powdered leaf. Using an extract is not recommended, as the hot water may break down some of the alkaloids, there’s no added benefit, and it’s more expensive. Boil 2-4 cups of water. The more water you use, the less strong the flavor, but as long as you drink it all the effects will be exactly the same.

Put the kratom powder into a large cup or container with a pour lip, and pour the boiling water on top. Stir until it is thoroughly mixed. Be sure there aren’t any clumps of dry powder. I highly recommend adding sugar, artificial sweeter, or honey (honey works the best to cut the bitterness), and stir. If using artificial sweetener, 2 packets is a good starting amount. Let sit until cool (at least 15 minutes), stirring occasionally.

Once cooled, allow the powder to settle to the bottom. Pour the tea into a drinking cup, and enjoy! At this point you can add more sweetener to taste, or add water or ice cubes to dilute the flavor. As long as you drink all of the liquid, the effects will be the same.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 spearmint teabag
  • 1 chamomile teabag
  • 2 teaspoons kratom
  • sugar, honey or artificial sweetener to taste
  • 1 teapot (I use something like this)

Double/triple/etc. the quantities to make a bigger batch.

Instructions

  1. Boil water in a kettle.
  2. Put both teabags and kratom in the teapot and pour boiling water over top.
  3. Let it steep for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Remove teabags.
  5. Put teapot in fridge and let it sit overnight. Kratom will settle to the bottom.
  6. In the morning, slowly pour the tea into a glass. Be sure to stop pouring once you notice the plant matter is about to come out of the spout. There will be a layer of kratom sludge left in the teapot—just dump it down the sink.
  7. Sweeten tea and drink! (I like to use two packets of Sweet’N Low.)

  1. The easiest method for me is using 2oz jars.
    1 Measure out 3 to 3-1/2 grams into each jar
    2 Add 1/4 cup boiling water
    3 Mix well
    4 Add V8 Splash (I like mixed berry)
    5 Close lid and shake
    6 Keep in fridge for later use

    I can measure out 2 weeks worth at a time and prepare them for the fridge 3 days at a time. It really takes a lot of prep time off my hands and keeps me from panicking if I have a sudden attack of pain and can’t handle Doug the prep one dose at a time.

  3. Thank you for all your great advice, I have chronic pain and no energy. I take opiates sparingly so I resort to mainly suffering. I was on prednisone short term for a sinus procedure and I was so happy I felt normal again and then found this page. I will definitely give this a try I need to start with Red Bali, I need pain relief and energy. Any other suggestions ?

  4. I’m trying this for the first time. I get strong panic attacks. I got the powder cuz I felt it would be more effective. My Dr. Took me off clonazepam after 20 years. Cuz they found cocaine in my urine. Any suggestions on dosage and best way to consume it.

      Don’t know if you ever got the answer you were looking for but when I started taking Kratom I would use a table spoon of the powdered leaf in boiled water like a tea. I bought a tea press so I would get less grit when drinking it. If you need to add milk and sugar like you would with tea in some cases it will help with the taste. It is a very strong earthy taste similar to Green tea. Much stronger though. The effects can take some time to kick in.

      1. Drugs affect people differently especially with underlying mental health concerns for example I have adhd/anxiety and stimulants put me to sleep. If I drink a big coffee I get sleepy before bed.

      2. Heather, I have anxiety attacks due to PTSD however Coke mellows me out bc I am also a very hyperactive person. Its like street adderall for some of us. But weed can give other panic attacks to some as well. Its all about ones chemistry

        1. .. may I add that this is why many choose kratom bc it can handle both and leave one not looking for trouble.

Green maengda is the strain you want.reds just dont have that panic attack reducing effect atleast for me anyways.the green maengda will literally erase my panic attacks even when im having horrible ones were im curled up in a ball hiding under my blankets in the corner of my room cauee i just feel soo trapped and restless.try 4-6 grams.juice mix it with some juice and let it sit so the powder can soak and not be all clumpy and then just down it and wait 30 minutes and you should be good 🙂

    3. I was in kinda the same situation as you. Work found marijuana in a drug test and I was sent to rehab, I had to get off of clonazepam too after close to 25 years. It’s hard!! I usually slowly simmer the powder in water for about 3 hours. I add honey, lemon and mango syrup. Then I use a cheesecloth to strain it into a pitcher. Then pour over ice!

      1. You simmer the powder for 3 hours? Or do you get it up to simmer then take it off and let it sit for three hours? If you heat it too long it ruins the alkaloids in the Kratom.. You should look that up, that’s what I’ve always read..

    4. Recommend highly 10caps red vein,followed by 4-6 every 4 hrs. Fak big pharma and street drugs. This really works gal. I like to switch it up with gold Bali caps. The powder is a hard way to go

    5. Try white Bali. I have MS and many spine and joint damage. I take the white bali and its powerful! Start with a out 1/4 tsp. Take from there, trying different amounts until it suits you. Red Bali for severe pain of course. I don’t mix it. I space it out.

I am on day 7 of quitting 55mg methadone cold turkey… I honestly have never felt so much pain and just wanted to die…well researching how to help with withdrawls is how I heard of kratom…I and feel better but I cant seem to gain any strength back and have the rls I’ve ever had…I have a bone disorder and had 6 knee surgeries to fix where my bone didnt grow right…I have literally tried everything so I am excited to heard how well it works for all of u…what dose would be best to start with?

Id say try about 5-6 grams of some green maeng da would be your best bet especially for the bone pain.fibro myalgia,R.A and 2 failed knee surgerys for me and been putting a full replacement off for years.just mix the powder with some type of juice n let it sit for about 5 minutes cause that will let the powder soak n be less clumpy then just down it and your good to go.you should feel it at the 30 minute mark if your take it on an empty stomache

  6. I usually put about 10 grams of White Maeng da in the morning or Red Bali in the evening into a coffee maker right in the coffee filter and make it like a cup of Joe though I use lots of honey

  7. I just made my first tea tonight. I added a spoonful of sugar and a dash of cinnamon. This tea is really GOOD. Everyone talks about how the flavor is strong and hard to mask but cinnamon does the job perfectly well.

  8. I use a tablespoon (not a measuring one) and put some stevia in it. Put the Kratom on top of that, then more stevia on top of I Kratom. Just take that and chase it wirh water. You could use sugar as well. It’s like…”a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down”.
